Sedrina
Welcome to Sedrina!
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Sedrina, a small town of about 2,500 inhabitants located in the province of Bergamo, Lombardy. Here you can find beautiful landscapes, but also a fascinating history that has characterized this place over the centuries.
The history of Sedrina
The origin of Sedrina is not entirely clear, but it is believed that there were small settlements already in the times of the Roman Empire. The toponym itself seems to derive from the term "Sedulina", a diminutive of "sede". However, the town was never particularly developed due to its very remote location and difficult to reach. There are only narrow paths that connect it to the nearest inhabited centers and the easiest roads go only north, towards Zogno and its fractions or on the right bank of the Brembo river.
In any case, this isolated position protected the country from barbarian invasions and fighting between Guelphs and Ghibellines. In the Middle Ages, Sedrina was managed by the bishop of Bergamo and was administratively united with Almè. Later, it separated from the XIV century to form the municipality of Sedrina and Stabello.
The Republic of Venice changed things: it decided to build the Priula road, which connected Bergamo to the Brembana valley passing through Sedrina. This road took the country out of commercial isolation and contacted it with other nearby countries. Here, Bergamo scholars like Bortolo Belotti think that there were a series of arches leaning against the rock wall and fixed to it with chains through which they passed. However, the construction process involved huge losses among workers, due to small wall collapses and fatal distractions.
After a brief interruption of the Cisalpine Republic, Sedrina became part of the Lombardo-Veneto Kingdom under Austrian rule. In this period, the "bridges of Sedrina" were built, a series of suspended bridges over the Brembo river that became famous and popular.
