Scisciano

Scisciano: an ancient town in Campania

Scisciano is a welcoming Italian municipality with a current population of approximately 6,143 inhabitants, located in the metropolitan city of Naples in Campania. The history and evolution of the territory date back to ancient times, known as "Ager Nolanus". The area played an important role as an integral part of that territory. The landscape was subsequently inhabited by the Osco-Opici and Etruscan peoples, the Samnites, and the Roman civilization. The "Borgate" of the Scisciano territory have an ancient history and were particularly the subject of a vast centuriazione in the 1st century AD. The careful allocation of land for farming resulted in the creation of numerous estates, or "praedium", whose owners influenced the name of the town.

Subsequent history

Let's relive the era after the fall of the Roman Empire. The Scisciano territory was the subject of disputes with the Duchy of Naples and the Duchy of Benevento. Between the 12th and 14th centuries, Scisciano acquired an effective status in terms of its social life. In addition, it was mentioned in the countless feudal sales of Marigliano and Brusciano. In 1392, Ramondello del Balzo Orsino acquired from Ottone di Brunswick, a prince of the Empire and lord of Acerra, the hamlets of Scisciano, San Vitaliano, and Brusciano. In addition, the ecclesiastical authorities conducted a complete survey of the income and tithes related to the churches, of which the parish in San Germano di Scisciano and the Church of Santa Maria (currently San Martino di Tours) already existed.

The numbering of "fuochi" in 1522

During the XIV century, the numbering of the "fuochi" also took place. In fact, the numbering of the hamlets of La Torre, Casola, San Martino, Li Manganelli, and the Corte de' li Setti, or also de' li Sancti, were recorded in 1522. The toponym Li Manganelli already disappeared during the XVI century, while the latter hamlet became Masseria Caliendo and was completely ruined.

Conclusion

In summary, Scisciano is a territory that encompasses ancient nuances in its past. Its landscape was inhabited by the people of the Campi Liborini and, together with the whole district of Marigliano, was the subject of a long dispute between the Duchy of Naples and the Duchy of Benevento. In the 12th century, the hamlets of the town began to grow, mentioned in the feudal sales of Marigliano and Brusciano. Furthermore, monuments and memories of the past and distant eras are still present, such as the numbering of "fuochi" in 1522. The presence of rural buildings and estates still deserves to remain unchanged and as many memories to preserve.
