Sampieri

Sampieri: A Magical Place

Hello friends! Today I'm taking you to discover Sampieri, a small seaside hamlet located in the province of Ragusa, in Sicily. With its 627 inhabitants, this beach resort offers enchantment and charm to every visitor. The historic center is composed of romantic stone houses and suggestive cobbled streets. Sampieri is located on a limestone spur, nestled between two beaches of fine golden sand. The larger beach extends for about 1800 meters east of the town, while the smaller one is located to the west for a length of about 400 meters. The economy of the area is linked to agricultural activities and tourism, boasting a top-notch hotel accommodation structure and a modern and functional campsite.

History

Sampieri is a place with ancient origins. Traces of human presence date back to the Neolithic period and are visible in the area of "Costa ri carro" near the smaller beach. Here, the remains of excavations for extractive purposes are still present, which suddenly stopped, perhaps due to a natural catastrophe. The "Cava rô Ràbbusu", a shallow valley in the hinterland of Fornace Penna, also testifies to the prehistoric presence in the area. According to some, in the past, Sampieri was a Greek colony called Apolline with a temple dedicated to Apollo Archegete. The Arabs mentioned it as Marsa Siklah, a port where ships coming from North Africa and the near east could dock until the thirteenth century, when it silted up. The name of Sampieri seems to be linked to the presence of the apostle Saint Peter who landed there in 40 AD. Others recall that even Paul of Tarsus spent some time there during his third apostolic journey, coming from Malta.

Places of Interest

Fornace Penna is a symbol of Sampieri and dominates the coastal landscape. It is located at the eastern end of the larger beach and on the top of a cliff about 5 meters high. The locals affectionately call it "Ô Pisciuottu". An arson fire destroyed the factory in 1924, but before the disaster, bricks were produced in this furnace that were exported throughout the Mediterranean basin. Today, only a ruin remains, but the building has become a tourist destination, especially after being chosen as a location for episodes of the famous TV series "Commissario Montalbano".

Sampieri is a place of extraordinary beauty. Nature expresses itself in all its magnificence and grandeur, offering exceptional scenery. You will have the opportunity to take walks along the coast, enjoy the beach between one swim in the crystal-clear sea and the other, savor delicious culinary delights such as fresh fish. Furthermore, you can visit the numerous tourist attractions of the area, including the Tower of Spaccamazzoni, the Fornace Castellana, and the Castello dei Naselli in Scicli. Sampieri and its territory offer unique emotions. Come and discover its magic and timeless beauty.
