Sciacca

Sciacca: history and culture

Sciacca is a city rich in history and culture. Founded by the Greeks in the 5th century BC, it has been ruled over the years by the Romans, Vandals, Goths, and Byzantines. During the Arab-Norman period, the city experienced a period of great splendour, while in the Middle Ages it suffered the consequences of the numerous barbarian and Turkish invasions.

The modern aspect of the city is due to the Liberty-style reconstruction after the earthquake of 1968.

Among the most important monuments that can be visited in Sciacca are the Cathedral of Maria SS. del Soccorso, the Church of San Michele, and the Tower of the Grifo, a suggestive Arab-Norman castle.

In addition, we cannot fail to mention the famous Carnival of Sciacca, one of the most important events in Italy, characterized by papier-mâché masks and masquerade parades.

Sciacca Thermal Baths and Ceramics

Sciacca is also known for its thermal baths. The Sciacca Thermal Baths have been exploited since 1800 BC and are among the oldest in Europe. Thanks to their location close to Mount San Calogero, they are fed by hot and mineral-rich waters. Today, the spas are an important center for wellness and body care.

The city of Sciacca is also famous for Sciacca ceramics. It is an ancient craft, dating back to the Greek-Roman period, which has found master craftsmen who have been able to rework and reinterpret it. Sciacca ceramics are characterized by vibrant colors and soft, sinuous shapes.
