Welcome to Bolzano: an overview of the Alpine city

Bolzano, or "Bozen" in German, is an Italian municipality located in the autonomous province of Bolzano in Trentino-Alto Adige. With a population of over 106,000 inhabitants, Bolzano is a bilingual city with 73.30% Italian speakers and 25.02% German speakers.

Territory

Bolzano is located at an altitude of 265 m and is situated east of the wide basin formed by the junction of the valleys of Val d'Isarco, Sarentino and Adige. The city is surrounded by mountains, including the Mendola mountain range to the west, the Salto plateau to the northwest and a minor peak of Renon to the northeast. To the southeast is Mount Pozza, on whose northern slope is the location of Colle. The city is crossed by the Talvera stream and the Isarco river, which flows into the Adige just south of the city itself. The historic center of Bolzano is located in the triangle delimited by the Talvera stream, the Isarco river and Mount Tondo to the northeast.

Climate

Bolzano has a subcontinental climate, with winter minimum temperatures generally below zero and summer maximum temperatures that can exceed 35°C. Precipitation averages just over 700 mm of rain annually, with a maximum in summer and a minimum in winter. Areas of the municipal territory located at higher altitudes are characterized by an alpine climate, with characteristics that vary according to altitude, orography and exposure.
