Scarmagno
Scarmagno: the Piedmontese municipality rich in history and natural beauty
Hi everyone! Today I will talk about a gem of Piedmont: Scarmagno! With its 829 inhabitants, this municipality in the metropolitan city of Turin is a small world waiting to be discovered.
Architectural Beauties
The first stop on our tour is the visit of the wonderful churches in the area. The parish church of San Michele Arcangelo, built in 1815, is an example of neoclassical architecture and is located right in the center of town. If you are looking for small pearls instead, the Chapel of Santa Marta or the Chapel of the Nativity of Mary will enchant you with their simplicity and beauty.
In the Scarmagno area, we also find the Church of Sant'Eusebio al Masero, dating back to the 10th century and containing a fresco dated 1424 attributed to Domenico della Marca di Ancona. Not only that: since 2010 it has been part of the Canavese section of the Via Francigena!
Natural areas
But Scarmagno is not just architecture: it will surprise you with the beauty of its nature. In particular, partially in the municipality's territory is the "Palude di Romano Canavese", recognized in 2009 as a site of community interest (code: IT1110064). Instead, the site of community interest (code: IT1110047) of Scarmagno - Torre Canavese (Ivrea right moraine) offers a unique glacial landscape, a testimony to the Quaternary glaciation.
Hamlets
The municipal territory of Scarmagno also boasts the hamlets of Bessolo and Masero, where you can discover the authenticity and beauty of Piedmontese traditions.
Economy
The economy of Scarmagno, until the 1960s, was based on agricultural activity. However, in the mid-decade, there was a proposal from the Olivetti company to settle in the area adjoining the town, bringing new vitality to the community. The new production facility resided in a vast plain area, with several modern and functional structures: from warehouses B, C, D, and E to a small building called Tecnologico, where research laboratories on Hybrid components were located. The complex included three canteens, a library, and a nursing station.
Unfortunately, the company went through a difficult phase, causing a crisis throughout the Scarmagno area. However, there is good news as Scarmagno has been evaluated as the second richest municipality in Italy per capita income! Numerous industrial and service companies have chosen to locate in the former Olivetti area and in the recently planned production activity zone in the latest PRG.
Conclusions
In short, Scarmagno is a municipality not to be missed! Its natural beauty and architectural wonders perfectly blend with modernity and innovation, testifying to a strong and vital community. Come and discover Scarmagno: you won't regret it!
