Scanzorosciate: history, nature and treasures in Lombardy

The History of Scanzorosciate

Origins

Scanzorosciate has an ancient and interesting history. The settlement of the Celts in Rosciate, from which the name derives, dates back to 400 BC, and means "village of grapes". Even the suffix -''ate'' has a Celtic root that means "settlement". Scanzo, on the other hand, originated later, in the 3rd century BC, thanks to the Roman Empire which dominated the entire peninsula, displacing the Celts.

The Middle Ages

The Middle Ages was a period of great importance for Scanzorosciate, located in a strategic position, close to Bergamo and along one of the main transit routes of the time. The fortifications and castles of Scanzo and Rosciate remain from the medieval period, such as the Bastia fortification, which is located on the homonymous mountain and was built in the 14th century. One of the most significant testimonies is the Borgogna canal, built in 1473 by the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni, which runs through the inhabited center of Scanzorosciate.

Modern age

The Republic of Venice ruled Scanzorosicate from the 15th to the 16th century, a period in which agriculture was accompanied by craftsmanship and liberal professions. In addition, the agricultural system grew after the plague and famine of the period, adding crops such as mulberry and corn to grape cultivation.

The Settlements of Scanzorosciate

The territory of Scanzorosciate is composed of five hamlets, each linked to a different parish. Scanzo, with the parish of San Pietro and Paolo, Rosciate, with the parish of Santa Maria Assunta, Negrone, with the parish of San Pantaleone and San Nicola, Tribulina, with the parish of San Giovanni nei Boschi, and Gavarno Vescovado with the parish of Santissima Trinità.

The Wonders of Scanzorosciate

Scanzorosciate has become one of the most sought after tourist destinations in the area, thanks to the strategic position of its Orobie hills on the border between the Bergamo plain and the mountains. Visitors can admire the Basia Park, a protected natural area, the Roman bridge of Negrone, the Church of Santa Maria della Neve in Rosciate, the chapel of San Giuseppe in Scanzo, and the Church of San Bartolomeo dell'Oliveto in Tribulina.
