Fellegara: history, geography and attractions of the Scandiano district.

History

The history of Fellegara dates back to 1185 when the municipality of Reggio Emilia opened a canal to bring water from the Secchia river to the city and built a defense fortress that later became the castle of Fellegara. Over the centuries, the castle was used as an outpost of the Rocca di Scandiano dei Boiardo, as a summer residence by the Rangoni Counts, and then for the marriage of Countess Bianca with Vittorino Palazzi Trivelli, founder and first president of the RACI (Real Automobile Club of Italy and Reggiana Calcio). Subsequently, the castle became the property of the Palazzi Trivelli Counts, who are still the current owners. Outside the walls of the castle, the old Fellegara mill was also built.

Around 1315, the Tresinaro stream was diverted to flow into the Secchia, which improved the situation of the surrounding countryside. Around the second half of the 15th century, Duke Borso d'Este built the so-called "barrel of the Secchia canal", a barrel covered with stone that lies under the stream bed just a few steps from the village.

During World War II, four members of the Resistance were shot on the bridges of Fellegara by the fascists of the Black Brigades of Reggio Emilia. Today, Fellegara is a place rich in history and tradition, to be explored on foot or by bike.

Monuments and places of interest

Fellegara has several cultural and religious attractions. These include the Church of San Savino Vescovo in Scandiano and the Church of the Beata Vergine della Neve in Scandiano.
