Scaletta Zanclea

Welcome to Scaletta Zanclea!

We are pleased to introduce our town of 1834 inhabitants located in the metropolitan city of Messina, Sicily. But don't be fooled by the size, Scaletta Zanclea has a lot to offer!

Physical geography of Scaletta Zanclea

The town assumed its current size in 1986, with the aggregation of the Divieto hamlet of the city of Messina. Previously, in 1928 it incorporated the municipalities of Guidomandri and Itala (Italy), but the latter was reconstituted in 1947. The town of Scaletta consists of the contiguous localities of Scaletta Marina and Guidomandri Marina, which stretch along the Ionian coast without interruption between Capo Scaletta to the north and the town of Itala Marina to the south; in the hinterland are the localities of Guidomandri (superiore) and Scaletta Superiore.

The history of Scaletta Zanclea

Scaletta was a fiefdom of the Ruffo di Calabria Princes and loyal allies of the Spanish. During the anti-Spanish revolt of Messina, it was besieged and taken by the French shortly after the fall of Taormina. But the history of the town is also enriched by the figure of the unscrupulous Macalda di Scaletta, Baroness of Ficarra and wife of Alaimo di Lentini, one of the protagonists of the Sicilian Vespers, born and lived in the Castle of Scaletta.

Contemporary age - Flood of 2009

Unfortunately, the recent history of Scaletta Zanclea is also marked by the Messina flood of 2009, a tragic event that caused several damages to the town.
