Scala
Scala: a small coastal town
Hi everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Scala, an Italian town in the province of Salerno in Campania. This town has around 1490 inhabitants and is famous because its territory has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997.
Physical Geography
Territory
Scala is located in the Amalfi Coast, a wonderful piece of Italian coast that hosts numerous famous tourist cities around the world. The territory of Scala is classified as zone 3 (low seismicity) according to Order PCM. 3274 of 20/03/2003.
History
The origin of the city
According to an ancient chronicle, Scala was founded in the 4th century by Roman shipwreck survivors headed to Constantinople. However, this information has never been historically confirmed. The rocky site of Scala was, however, chosen for its strategic position.
Medieval conflicts
Scala and Ravello were combat scenarios in medieval times, with clashes between the Republic of Pisa and Roger II of Sicily between 1135 and 1137. The conflict was resolved with the victory of the sovereign. Some of the city's medieval fortifications are still visible and rich in history.
The diocese of Scala
In 987, Scala became a diocese. However, it has never been an official diocese recognized by the Church. The diocese of Scala was created later, at the end of the 11th century. The first documented bishop of Scala is a certain Alessandro in 1118.
The destruction suffered
Despite Scala's history being characterized by some military conflicts, the city played an important role in the affairs of the maritime republic. Scala participated in trade and craftsmanship, but also suffered numerous devastations, including the fire due to the Norman pillage in 1073, the destruction inflicted by the Pisans and the incursion of the armies of Otto IV of Brunswick in 1210.
Conclusions
Scala is a small coastal town with a long history behind it. Despite the numerous destructions suffered, the city has been able to maintain itself over time and preserve the rich historical and cultural heritage still visible today. If you are in the Amalfi Coast area, I highly recommend visiting Scala and discovering for yourself all that it has to offer!
