Discovering the Municipality of Scafa
Hello everyone! Today, I will talk to you about the Municipality of Scafa, a small town in the Abruzzo region located in the province of Pescara.
History of Scafa
In the past, Scafa was a small cluster of workers' houses. However, starting from the mid-1800s, it began to populate due to the construction of the railway station of the Roma-Sulmona-Pescara line, becoming a fraction of San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore. Nevertheless, the municipality was only established in 1948, during the increased industrial presence of the Val Pescara.
In this small town, the dialectal poet Giuseppe Tontodonati was born, and he described the village in one of his poems from 1976.

It has a stone-decorated façade with a false Romanesque arched portal and a rose window. The bell tower has a final spire. The interior is a single nave, supported by arches passing from one side to the other through buttresses.
The Church of Santa Maria Goretti, located in Via Celestino V, is the oldest in Scafa. It has a rectangular plan and a bell tower. The façade was rebuilt in pseudo-Romanesque style after the Avezzano earthquake in 1915 and features a radial rose window and a round arch portal.

Demographic Evolution
As in many other Italian municipalities, the population of Scafa has had its ups and downs over the years. However, thanks to the economic development that affected the area in the past, the number of residents has grown considerably.
Languages and Dialects
Scafa and San Valentino in Abruzzo Citeriore belong to the Eastern Adriatic Abruzzese of the local languages. Today, the common language in the Scafese area is that of the koinè of the Pescara-Chieti metropolitan area, developed in the second half of the last century. This is the basis of both the current intermediate register of regional Italian and the Abruzzese Adriatic regional dialectal register.
