Physical geography
Savoia di Lucania is located in a mountainous area near Caggiano, Picerno, Sant'Angelo Le Fratte, Satriano di Lucania, Tito (Italy), and Vietri di Potenza. Thanks to its pristine location, this city has been given the title of "headquarters of the Melandro Mountain Community."
History
The original name of the town, Salvia, derives from the aromatic plant that still grows spontaneously in the area. During the Kingdom of Naples, Salvia was part of the Sala District of the Citra Principality, which was under the district of Caggiano from 1811 to 1844. Then, from 1844 to 1861, it was under the district of Vietri di Potenza.
In 1879, the name of Salvia was changed to Savoia di Lucania as a "reparative gesture" towards the House of Savoy, as the village was the birthplace of Giovanni Passannante, a cook with anarchist ideas who unsuccessfully attempted to kill King Umberto I. However, the inhabitants still retain the name of "salviani."
