Savogna d'Isonzo

Discovering Savogna d'Isonzo

Hello friends, today I will talk to you about Savogna d'Isonzo, a municipality located in the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region, in Italy. The name of the town comes from the Slovenian language and means "confluence of waters" because this place is located at the confluence of the Isonzo and Vipacco rivers.

The physical geography of Savogna d'Isonzo

The territory of Savogna d'Isonzo can be divided into two parts: a flat area used for agricultural activities such as the cultivation of corn, wheat and vines, and a karst zone mostly covered by woods and shrubs. The highest mountain is Mount San Michele. The waters of the Isonzo and Vipacco rivers flow through the territory making the landscape very suggestive. The two rivers have quite different characteristics: the Isonzo has a pebbly bed and a more torrential flow, while the Vipacco has a muddy bed and a lower but more constant flow.

The Karst and the caves

The karst area of Savogna d'Isonzo is a plateau of limestone rocks covered by woods and shrubs. The only proper karst settlement is the fraction of San Michele del Carso, located about 2 km from the town center. Here there are numerous caves, some of which have been sites of prehistoric life. Among the most important are the Regina del Carso Cave, the Vivisce Cave and the della Rupe Cave.

The Vallone and the fractions

To the east of Savogna d'Isonzo rise two large limestone blocks, on which the fractions of Peci and Rupa are located. Between the Vipacco and the Karst are situated the habitations of Gabria and Rubbia, which hosts a castle, squeezed between the two tributaries. In addition, there is the Vallone, a valley that extends into the eastern part of the municipality and is believed to have been the ancient bed of a prehistoric river.

The origins of the name of Savogna d'Isonzo

The name of the town comes from the Slovenian language, which describes it as "confluence of waters". In conclusion, Savogna d'Isonzo is a suggestive and very interesting place from a geological point of view. I recommend visiting it to discover more about its history and natural beauties.
