The province of Crotone borders the province of Cosenza to the northwest and the province of Catanzaro to the southwest. It was established on March 6, 1992, together with the province of Vibo Valentia, and the body became operational in the spring of 1995.

History

The proposal for the establishment of a new province, separated from that of Catanzaro, was already presented in 1957. But the request was finally approved only in 1992. Crotone also has an ancient history as a center of Magna Graecia. Over the years, it has become the main industrial center in Calabria, specializing in the chemical industry. In 1993, it underwent a strong downsizing due to the factories mentioned above.

Physical geography

The territory includes both the Ionian Sea and the mountains of the Sila. In the province of Crotone there are numerous seaside resorts, such as Le Castella and Punta Alice. In the mountainous territory, the locality of Trepidò is a renowned place. Furthermore, in the Sila, there are the villages of Villaggio Palumbo and Villaggio Pino Grande. There are also the mountains of Monte Giove, Monte Femminamorta and part of Monte Gariglione, very important for botany and biodiversity. In the area there are also two typically mountain villages: Villaggio Fratta and Villaggio Principe.

The Arbëreshë community

In the province of Crotone, there is also the Arbëreshë community, a small community of Albanian language, located mainly in the municipalities of Pallagorio, San Nicola dell'Alto and Carfizzi. Here the population fluently speaks the Arbëreshë language, an Albanian dialect. Public offices in the area admit the double validity of Albanian and Italian language.
