Physical geography

Sasso di Castalda is located at an altitude of 949 meters and borders Brienza, Satriano di Lucania, Marsico Nuovo, Tito and Abriola. The city is part of the National Park of the Lucanian Apennines Val d'Agri Lagonegrese and hosts a large fauna area with deer and other wildlife. There are also many hiking opportunities, including the famous Frassati Trail.

History

The territory of Sasso di Castalda has been inhabited since the Roman era and was a Norman fortress. It was called Sasso for many years before assuming its current name in 1863. After the abolition of feudalism, the Risorgimento movements and the annexation to the Kingdom of Italy, the town participated in subsequent national events and the last two world wars. The historical and architectural heritage of Sasso di Castalda is remarkable and includes the Church of the Immaculate, which houses an eighteenth-century bust of Saint Emidio, protector against earthquakes.

Sasso di Castalda has numerous tourist attractions to offer, including the Church of the Immaculate, the Church of San Rocco, the Chapel of San Michele, the village of Manche and the skiing facilities of Mount Pierfaone. Sasso di Castalda has a handicraft tradition linked to the peasant and pastoral culture. Among the most renowned activities are those of leather and ceramics processing.

The municipality is crossed by the Provincial Road 39 and the State Road 598 of Fondo Valle d'Agri.

Tourism

Ponte alla Luna is the main tourist attraction of Sasso di Castalda. Its inauguration in 2017 gave a strong boost to the enhancement of the territory, attracting numerous visitors from all over the world. The largest bridge is about 120 meters high and crossing it is an exciting experience. In addition to the bridge, there are also many hiking trails and ferratas with free access in the area.
