Sassello

Welcome to Sassello!

Hi everyone! Today I want to talk to you about Sassello, a small municipality in the province of Savona in Liguria. Despite being a relatively small village, Sassello has a lot to offer, especially for nature lovers and those seeking tranquility during their holidays.

Physical Geography

Sassello is located in the Ligurian Apennines, near the border between Liguria and Piemonte. It is part of the Beigua Regional Natural Park and is crossed by the Erro river. Additionally, a part of the Antenna lake falls within the municipal territory. What sets Sassello apart from other holiday destinations is the relatively cool climate, especially during the summer. In fact, the average temperature in July is only +20.1°C. Winters, on the other hand, can be quite cold, especially at night, with temperatures reaching -22.1°C. But don't worry, daytime will always be a little milder.

What to Visit

If you come to Sassello, you cannot miss a visit to the Scanizzon lake, located at 803 m above sea level and reachable with an easy hiking trail. This small lake of probable glacial origin is definitely worth a visit. Furthermore, for those who enjoy more challenging hikes, there is the north-eastern slope of Mount Beigua, where the Laione peat bog is located at 987 m above sea level. But the town itself also has a lot to offer with its ancient village. Do not miss the castle of Bastia Soprana, dating back to the 14th century, and the castle of Bastia Sottana, built around 1450. Both have been restored and are open to visitors.

History

The history of Sassello dates back a long time, so much so that it is said that there was already a settlement in this place in prehistoric times. In the Middle Ages it was part of the Marquisate of Ponzone and then passed under the dominion of Doria, lords of Genoa, who governed the municipality but with whom the inhabitants of the village did not get along well. After a rebellion by the Sassello locals, the Doria sold the fief to the Republic of Genoa in 1612. Over the centuries, Sassello has suffered devastations and fires, but has always managed to recover and rebuild its ancient village, which we can admire today.

Conclusions

In short, Sassello is a perfect destination for those seeking a relaxing holiday in the midst of nature and tranquility but without having to give up the discovery of new places and the history of an age-old town. Do not be intimidated by winter temperatures and come and discover this Ligurian gem!
