Welcome to Sarnonico: a bit of history and geography
Hello everyone! Today I will talk to you about Sarnonico, a municipality in the autonomous province of Trento, located about 980 meters above sea level. Sarnonico has about 799 inhabitants and is a delightful destination for a mountain holiday. Are you ready to discover a bit of history and geography of this enchanting village?
Physical geography
Sarnonico is located in the Upper Val di Non, in Val di Non, on the western slope. The town is located on a hilly ridge that separates it from Seio. Thanks to the width of the valley, the climate here is mild for most of the year, despite the average altitude of 963 meters above sea level. The municipal territory extends up to the ridge of Monte Penegal and is surrounded by forests. Sarnonico is surrounded by a breathtaking view of the Dolomites, perfect for those who love hiking and walks in nature.
Origin of the name
The toponym Sarnonico would derive from the Rhaetian term "Sara", which means "gravel". In fact, the moraine undulations that characterize this area of the Upper Anaunia are formed by piles of gravel, residues of the retreat of the glaciers during the last glaciation.
History
Medieval period
The territory of Sarnonico has no traces of Roman or Rhaetian era. However, it is presumed that Sarnonico was built after the events of the valley and that there was an observation tower on the Doss dei Mori to control the mule track that descended from the Passo della Mendola towards Seio and Dambel.
Sarnonico became the seat of a parish dedicated to St. Lawrence, whose power extended to Seio, Vasio, Malosco, Ronzone, Ruffré, Cavareno, and Senale. In the Lombard era, Sarnonico was subject to the civil power of the Gastaldo of Romeno and, during the rule of the prince-bishopric of Trento, in turn, was headed by the "vicedomino" of the Val di Non.
Under the prince-bishopric of Trento
In the early years of the 14th century, there were two castles in the territory of Sarnonico: Seio, which was soon abandoned, and the one on the hill of Moremberg. The de Morris were enfeoffed by the bishop of the fortification and the attached territories in 1380, taking the name of Moremberg. In the 15th century, Sarnonico was involved in the struggles between the episcopal power and the nobles, in particular the Rottenburg and the Habsburgs. The transgressions of the parties involved led the inhabitants to draw up the first Charter of Rules, where the civic ordinances and customs in force were listed in writing in order to protect themselves against future princes.
