Piobbico

Discovering Piobbico

Hello friends, today I will talk to you about Piobbico, a small hamlet located in the municipality of Sarnano, in the province of Macerata, in the Marche region of Italy. The hamlet is located at an altitude of 730 meters above sea level and is located 4.04 kilometers from the municipality of Sarnano. One of the reasons people come to Piobbico is the Valle dei Tre Santi, a natural gorge created by the Tennacola, located between the hamlets of Giampereto of Sarnano and Pintura of Bolognola.

Origin of the name

According to the ideas of the Sarnano historian Giacinto Pagnani, the name "Piobbico" would derive from the Latin "Publicum", which referred to public areas intended for cultivation belonging to the Roman Republic.

Piobbico: history, art, and relaxation amidst medieval monuments.

The history of Piobbico

Piobbico was an important location during World War II. During the Nazi-fascist occupation, the local population helped a group of partisans who escaped just in time before Axis soldiers found them. However, Lieutenant Decio Filipponi, the leader of the group, stayed behind and was captured. He was brutally beaten and then hanged on an electric pole. His sacrifice allowed the population of the settlement to save their lives.

Monuments

Piobbico is a very characteristic and peaceful hamlet where you can spend a few hours in total relaxation. Here you can visit the Abbey of San Biagio, which was built in 1030 in Romanesque style, consecrated on July 18, 1059, and managed by the Benedictine monks until its fall. The abbey is an example of medieval architecture and its interior is adorned with beautiful frescoes that increase its artistic value.
