Sarezzano
Welcome to Sarezzano!
Sarezzano, also known as Sarzàn in Piedmontese and Sarsòu in Tortona dialect, is a municipality located on a hilly area on the left hydrographic bank of the Grue (stream) in the province of Alessandria, Piedmont. This village has a very interesting history dating back to Roman times, as evidenced by various finds that have been discovered in the municipal territory.
History
In the Middle Ages, Sarezzano belonged to the Diocesi di Tortona lordship and was linked to the Guelfs. From the 15th century to the end of the 18th century, it was a fief of the Guidobono Cavalchini, after which, along with the entire Tortonese, it passed to the Kingdom of Sardinia. The castle chapel was severely damaged by lightning in 1610 and then rebuilt. In 1855, it was elevated to a parish, but then replaced in the 1950s by a newly built building at the foot of the hill where the castle stood, dedicated to Saints Ruffino and Venanzio.
In 1585, inside the village church next to the remains of Saints Ruffinio and Venanzio, the Codex Purpureus Sarzanensis was found, a high medieval code of valuable workmanship consisting of 72 sheets with the text of the four gospels. Written in the 5th or 6th century on reddish parchment, the code is contained in a wooden case; after being lost, it was then found again in 1872.
Symbols
The municipal coat of arms of Sarezzano takes up the coat of arms of the Sarezzano family who were lords of the place.
Culture
Sarezzano is part of the culturally homogeneous territory of the Quattro province characterized by common customs, uses, and a repertoire of very ancient music and dances. The principal instrument of this area is the Apennine flute, which, accompanied by the accordion, and formerly by the müsa (Apennine bagpipe), leads the dances and enlivens the festivals.
