Climate

Throughout the Sarentino valley, there is a typical alpine climate characterized by low temperatures. There is a large amount of precipitation, occurring in all seasons, with rain and snow prevailing and, sporadically, thunderstorms. The average temperature in Sarentino is about 7.1°C.

Origins of the name

The name "Sarntal" derives from the word Saretin, which appears in medieval documents. This name, according to some historians, would derive from the name of the Sarunetes population who lived at the sources of the Rhine, while others argue that both names derive from a pre-Roman root "sar" meaning "gravel."

Brief history of the city of Sarentino

Despite its proximity to the city of Bolzano, Sarentino has maintained its strong traditions intact, thanks to its relative geographical position. In 1494, King Maximilian I had a road built that connected Bolzano with the valley, to facilitate communications between the two cities. Over the centuries, the valley has been renowned for embroidery on leather and for the particular art of carving peasant pipes "Reggele." The city is also known for the production of handmade woolen clothing, such as the "Sarner" jacket.

Symbols

The coat of arms of Sarentino is a combination of the insignia of the various lords who have ruled the territory since 1315. However, since 1681, they called themselves "Counts of Sarentino" and resided in the Kellerburg Castle.
