Welcome to Sarconi, the "little Mesopotamia" of Val d'Agri!
Sarconi, with its 1415 inhabitants, is located in the province of Potenza in Basilicata and is famous for its internationally exported bean, celebrated during the annual Festa del Fagiolo in August.
Physical geography

History of Sarconi
Sarconi has very ancient origins, linked to the Roman colony of Grumentum. The village seems to owe its name to the Latin "sarculum" meaning place covered with shrubs and open to cultivation. According to others, the name comes from the Greek "sarkos," meaning flesh, as the fallen from a battle between Romans and Carthaginians in the 3rd century BC would be buried in Sarconi. Over time, the village was ruled by the Sanseverino family and later by the Pignatelli, princes of Marsico Nuovo. At the beginning of the 18th century, the village had over 3000 inhabitants. Sarconi was also hit by the 1857 Basilicata earthquake, which heavily affected Val d'Agri. Many residents joined the Risorgimento movements, raised a Carbonari banner, and finally fought with Giuseppe Garibaldi.
