Sanzeno

Sanzeno: a town between history, art and nature

Welcome to Sanzeno, a small municipality in Val di Non that will allow you to discover the history, art and nature of this Trentino region. Located in the center of the valley, Sanzeno has ancient origins dating back to the Roman era: the village of "Metho" has been known since Roman times. However, the history of the town is also linked to a tragic event: the killing of the missionaries Sisinnio, Martirio, and Alessandro in 397 AD. Following the construction of the Basilica dei Santi Martiri, the village was named "San Sisinnio" but then the name transformed into "San Sesen" and finally into Sanzeno.

Monuments and places of interest

The history of Sanzeno is reflected in its monuments and places of interest. The Basilica dei Santi Martiri, dating back to the fifteenth century, is one of the oldest churches in Val di Non. Built on a previous building, the church was commissioned by Prince Bishop Johannes Hinderbach. In the center of the town, there is the Church of Sant'Alessandro, linked to the legend of the construction of the first chapel of the Martyrs. Sanzeno also has other interesting churches, such as the Church of Santa Maria, dating back to the tenth century, and the Church of Sant'Antonio and the Saints Peter and Paul.

Not far from Sanzeno, there is the Sanctuary of San Romedio, which can be reached by a suggestive walk starting from the Museo Retico, located at the entrance of the valley.
