Santo Stefano Roero

Welcome to Santo Stefano Roero!

Hi everyone! Today I will talk to you about Santo Stefano Roero, a municipality in the province of Cuneo in Piedmont, Italy. This small town is home to 1346 people and is located in the Roero territory.

History

The history of Santo Stefano Roero dates back to the first half of the 12th century, when it was known as "de Astixio". In the 15th century, it became known as Roero, like the town of Monteu Roero, to which it was united by a feudal dependency. Marchesa Adelaide di Susa was the lord of the town until she donated part of it to Guglielmo, bishop of Asti, who later entrusted the territory to the castellans. The feudal lordship then passed to the counts Biandrate di Porcile. In 1290, they were defeated by the city of Asti but nine years later, they sold the lordship of Santo Stefano and the nearby Monteu to the Roero di Asti, to whom it remained until the abolition of the fiefs. Over the centuries, other families had jurisdiction over the town, such as the Carroni di Cerrione, the Chiesa Rotario, the Gromis di Trana, the Rotario di Piea, the Rotario or Roero di Chivasso and the Roero di Castagnito.

The church of San Bernardino is located in a high and panoramic position in the village and has been recently restored.

Military architecture

Another attraction of Santo Stefano Roero is the medieval tower. Erected by the Biandrate in 1217, it was square and 25 meters high. In 1841, the owners donated it to the municipal administration, which decided to preserve it as much as possible as a testimony to the antiquity of the town. In 1988, the tower was halved because the rock on which it stood had become so thin as to make the structure dangerous. In 2002, due to a landslide, the tower collapsed completely. In the following years, there was talk of rebuilding it, but due to the high cost, the project was never realized.
