The history of Turin begins in the 3rd century BC, when the city was founded by the Taurini. The current location was chosen for its strategic position and proximity to rivers. Later, the city was transformed into a Roman colony by Augustus with the name ''Iulia Augusta Taurinorum'' in the 1st century BC.

Duchy of Turin and House of Savoy

After the Ostrogoth domination, Turin became the capital of an important Duchy of Turin. In the 11th century, it passed under the nominal lordship of the House of Savoy and in 1563 became its capital.

Kingdom of Sardinia and unification of Italy

From 1720 to 1861, Turin was the capital of the Kingdom of Sardinia. In the 19th century, this state brought forward the Italian Risorgimento and in 1861 Turin was the first capital of the Kingdom of Italy. This title of capital was maintained until 1865.

Tourist attractions

Turin is famous for its many tourist attractions. Among the main ones there are some palaces and areas belonging to the circuit of Savoy residences in Piedmont (World Heritage Site) and the Po hills area (Biosphere Reserve). The city also hosts numerous museums, such as the Egyptian Museum, the National Cinema Museum and the Automobile Museum.

Cultural events

The city of Turin is very active culturally. It has hosted important events, such as the International Exhibition of 1911 and the Winter Olympic Games of 2006. In 2021 it started hosting the ATP Finals and in 2022 it hosted the Eurovision Song Contest 2022. The city also boasts a strong artistic and culinary tradition.

Industry

Turin is one of the major hubs of Italy's Universities, Art, Tourism, Science, and cultural industries. It is also the center of the Italian automotive industry, with numerous big names such as FIAT and Lancia. The city is also an important center for publishing, banking, insurance, information technology, and fashion.
