Altilia: a communal hamlet of Santa Severina
Hello friends, today I'm talking about Altilia, a communal hamlet of the municipality of Santa Severina located in the province of Crotone, just 4.90 km away from the center of Santa Severina.
History
Monuments and places of interest
In this area of great historical and cultural interest, lies the Marian sanctuary which is a reference for the whole of Calabria, the Monastery of Our Lady of Calabria. This place of worship dates back to 1100 and was originally supported by the Normans under the direct protection of Emperor Frederick II of Swabia.
According to Ferdinando Ughelli, the Calabromaria monastery was confirmed by Roberto Guiscard's son, Ruggero Borsa, to Bishop Policronio in Santa Severina at the end of May 1099. Later, in 1115, on the first day of June, Ruggero II confirmed the reconfirmation of the possession of the monastery to Bishop Policronio.
Between the sixteenth and early seventeenth centuries, the commendatory abbots of the monastery were the Barracco family, an important family of that time. Tiberio Barracco took care to preserve the ancient archival documents of Calabromaria and had them transcribed in 1581 by a public notary, an important historical testimony kept in the Historical Archives of Naples.
Today, only a few places and parts of the monastery complex remain, transformed into a baronial palace of the Barracco family at the beginning of the nineteenth century. A recent archaeological study in 2010 highlighted the entire state of degradation and the total transformation of some artificial cavities on the front of the slope facing the Barracco palace. Nevertheless, the complexity and historical density of this monumental place of the Barracco palace still remains surprising even today.
