Welcome to the Province of Crotone: The Territory, History, and Symbols

Hello everyone! Are you ready to learn more about the Province of Crotone? This beautiful Italian province is located in Calabria and has a population of approximately 160,638 people. It covers an area of 1,716 km² and includes various municipalities. The province faces the Ionian Sea to the east, borders the Province of Cosenza to the northwest, and the Province of Catanzaro to the southwest. The province was established on March 6, 1992, together with the Province of Vibo Valentia, through a reorganization of the territory previously included in the Province of Catanzaro. The institution became operational in the spring of 1995.

History

The Province of Crotone boasts a millenary history and an ancient tradition of Magna Graecia. But let's move on to more recent history. In 1957, a group of fifty mayors from the Crotonese and Rossanese regions declared themselves in favor of the establishment of a new entity with Crotone as its capital. However, the proposal was not approved. It was only in 1989 that a new request was formalized by twenty-seven mayors. In 1992, this request became definitive.

Crotone: history, territory and traditions.

Physical Geography

The territorial province of Crotone extends between the Ionian Sea and the Sila Mountains. Renowned seaside tourist resorts are Le Castella (Isola di Capo Rizzuto) and Punta Alice (comune di Cirò Marina), which promptly receives the Blue Flag for clean sea. If you have a little more time, I suggest you visit Capo Colonna, which is a highly recommended cultural destination. In the Sila Mountains, we have the locality of Trepidò (comune di Cotronei), where the famous Villaggio Palumbo and Villaggio Pino Grande, a fraction of Savelli in the Sila, are located. The Silan territory at the border of the Province of Catanzaro includes mountains such as Monte Giove, Monte Femminamorta, and part of Monte Gariglione, which are very important for botany and biodiversity. In this area, you will also find two typical mountain villages, Villaggio Fratta and Villaggio Principe.

Symbols

The emblems of provinces represent an important part of their identity, and Crotone is no exception. The provincial coat of arms consists of a blue shield with the figure of a black crow placed on a gold stripe. In addition to this, there are various other images such as the tridenteadamantinum. The inscription on this provincial coat of arms is "PROVINCIA DI CROTONE." However, the image that best represents this beautiful province is undoubtedly that of the Castle of Le Castella. The latter stands majestically above the sea and is a real architectural jewel.

The Arbëreshë Community

The province of Crotone is also home to the Arbëreshë community. This community is of Albanian origin, and the language spoken is still arbëreshë. It is a real linguistic treasure present in small municipalities such as Pallagorio, San Nicola dell'Alto, and Carfizzi. They are truly a unique community and represent an important part of Crotone's culture.

In conclusion, I hope to have given you a better understanding of the Province of Crotone. If you are looking for a vacation that embodies nature, culture, and history, then Crotone is definitely the right place for you. Thank you for reading until the end, I bid you farewell and look forward to having you here soon!
