Santa Luce
Welcome to Santa Luce, Tuscany!
Hello everyone! Today I will be talking about Santa Luce, an Italian commune located in the province of Pisa, Tuscany. With its 1615 inhabitants, Santa Luce is a peaceful place nestled in the Pisane Hills and the northernmost reaches of the Maremma Pisana.
A journey through the Tuscan hills
In the past, Santa Luce was part of the commune of Orciano Pisano before becoming a separate commune in 1957. With an area of 66.72 sq km, Santa Luce enjoys a temperate climate with a climate classification of zone D and medium-high seismic activity. The wild nature and beauty of the landscape make this commune a place of interest for visitors looking for an authentic experience in the stunning region of Tuscany.
Deep roots in Tuscan history
The area where Santa Luce now stands has an ancient history dating back to the Etruscan era. The village fell under the control of various families, such as the Cadolingi and the Upezzinghi, before becoming part of the Republic of Florence in 1406. In 1496, the village was destroyed along with Orciano Pisano following a failed Pisane uprising against Florence.
Local treasures to discover
Santa Luce has many places of historical and cultural interest. These include the Romanesque Pieve in the village of Pieve Santa Luce, the provincial nature reserve of Lake Santa Luce, the alabaster ecomuseum, and the abandoned village of Monteforti with the remains of the Madonna Sanctuary, which was once the most important in the area. One of Santa Luce's treasures is the Lama Tzong Khapa Institute, a Buddhist cultural center founded in 1977 and one of the most important in Europe.
A welcoming community
Santa Luce is a place where time seems to stand still. The number of inhabitants has remained constant over the years, but despite the small community, the villages of Pastina (326 inhabitants) and Pieve Santa Luce (162 inhabitants) offer local shops, bars, and regular cultural events.
