Santa Giustina: a town surrounded by nature

Santa Giustina is a large town located in the Belluno province, in the heart of the Val Belluna and surrounded by some of the most beautiful mountains of the Dolomites. Its geographic location makes it the perfect starting point for any kind of journey in the region.

Physical geography

The town of Santa Giustina is situated on the right bank of the Piave River, which acts as its southern border. It is equidistant from the two main towns of the province, Belluno and Feltre, and is connected to them via the State Road No. 50.

The territory is delimited by the Salmenega stream to the west and the Cordevole River to the east, which flows into the Piave River. The mountains to the north of the town are Monte Pizzocco, Monte Tre Pietre, and Monte Palmàr. The highest point in Santa Giustina is 2168 meters above sea level.

Morphology

Santa Giustina features a wide variety of landscapes due to the altitude range of approximately 1900 meters. There are three distinct areas within the municipal territory.

The mountain area includes the Erera-Brendol plateau and Piani Eterni, characterized by an elevation ranging from 700 to 2187 meters above sea level. Here, steep slopes, gorges, ridges, and rocky slopes dominate the scenery, with beech woods in the lower area and pine forests in the upper area. This area is part of the National Park of the Belluno Dolomites.

The hilly area is situated between 320 and 700 meters above sea level and features an irregular and gentle morphology south of Cergnai, while north of the town it is very steep, with moraines dating back to the last glaciation.

The valley floor area is the most urbanized zone in the municipality and is composed of an alluvial landscape characterized by an agricultural-mountain scenery that hosts the main inhabited centers of the area such as Santa Giustina, Formegan, Meano, Salzan, and Campo. The body of water of the Piave River, Cordevole River, Veses stream, Salmenega, and Morol can be found here.
