Santa Cristina and Bissone: a Municipality rich in history and tradition
If you are looking for a quiet place where you can breathe the air of the countryside and immerse yourself in the history of the past, Santa Cristina and Bissone is the right place for you. Located east of the province of Pavia, this Municipality has about 1859 inhabitants and was founded in the eighth century around the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Cristina.
History
The history of Santa Cristina and Bissone is very rich and closely intertwined with that of the ancient Benedictine Abbey of the place. Founded by Liutprand, king of the Lombards, in the first half of the eighth century with the name of Sant'Anastasio, it was dedicated to the Saint who still bears her name today in the ninth century. Over the centuries, the monastery was visited by emperors and popes, until its suppression in the seventeenth century.
The village of Santa Cristina developed right around the abbey and became an integral part of the Lower Campaign of Pavia. In 1841, Bissone, another nearby locality, merged with the municipality of Santa Cristina giving life to the Santa Cristina and Bissone we know today.
Symbols
The coat of arms of the Municipality of Santa Cristina and Bissone was adopted in 1908 and represents the Abbey of Santa Cristina and the biscione (a serpentine emblem), the symbol of the locality of Bissone. The gonfalon has an intense blue color.
