Santa Cristina e Bissone

Santa Cristina and Bissone: a Municipality in the Pavia Plain

Hello everyone! Today I'd like to tell you about Santa Cristina and Bissone, a small municipality in Lombardy's Pavia province, with a population of around 1,859 people. It's located in the plain to the left of the Olona River in the eastern area of Pavese.

History

The history of Santa Cristina is closely linked to the ancient Benedictine Abbey of Santa Cristina. Founded by Liutprand, king of the Lombards, in the first half of the 8th century, it was originally called Sant'Anastasio before being dedicated to Saint Cristina in the 9th century. Over the centuries, a succession of donations made the structure particularly important to the rulers and religious figures of the time. In the 15th century, the Benedictines passed the monastery to the Vallombrosan monks, until its suppression in 1654.

The village of Santa Cristina developed around the monastery and was first mentioned in the imperial diploma granted by Frederick Barbarossa to Pavia in 1164. Until the suppression, the village remained under the feudal lordship of the monastery and was part of the Campagna Sottana di Pavia. After the suppression, the lordship passed to the Germanic College.

In 1841, the municipality of Bissone was incorporated into Santa Cristina, and in 1863 the municipality took the name of Santa Cristina and Bissone.
