The history of Santa Brigida

Santa Brigida has a truly interesting history. In fact, the first documents attesting to the existence of the village date back to the year 917! It is thought that the first settlements date back to the time of the barbarian invasions. In particular, it is presumed that the inhabitants of the nearby Valsassina were the first to arrive.

Since the Middle Ages, the village acquired a certain importance in the field of nail production, obtained from the iron extracted from nearby mines, and in the production of wood charcoal. The village had a flourishing period during the Republic of Venice. Only recently has the economy revived thanks to tourism, which has not distorted the soul of the village.

The symbols of Santa Brigida

The coat of arms and the gonfalon of Santa Brigida were granted by decree of the President of the Republic on October 29, 1997. The gonfalon is a white drape.

What to visit in Santa Brigida

The most important monument in Santa Brigida is the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows (Santa Brigida). This church, dating back to the 11th-12th centuries and renovated two centuries later, was consecrated by St. Charles Borromeo in 1566. For many years it was the religious reference point of the village and the surrounding villages, serving as the parish church until the construction of the new church.
