Sant'Omero: between history, art, and Abruzzese flavors.

Brief history of Sant'Omero

The history of Sant'Omero dates back to Roman times when the territory had a period of great prosperity thanks to the settlement of various noble families. During the fall of the Roman Empire, the city was fortified and consequently developed. From 1154 it was a fiefdom of Gualtiero di Rinaldo and then passed to the Acquaviva of Atri from 1382 to 1639.

Sant'Omero was very important for the Acquaviva family, in fact, they organized defenses with an imposing city wall and the castle became a residence for the family. The castle was then renovated in the Renaissance period and became a residence for the Mendoza family.

Highlights of cultural heritage

In addition to the historical places mentioned, there are many other interesting tourist spots in the city such as the church of Santa Maria Assunta, which dates back to the fifteenth century and has recently been restored. The church preserves many valuable works of art, including a canvas of Saint Nicholas of Bari and the Madonna of the Rosary.

Furthermore, there is the church of San Giovanni Decollato, quite modest, but rich in history and tradition. Inside the church, there is also a statue of Saint John.
