We are pleased to introduce you to the town of Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte, a small city located in the province of Benevento. It is situated in a dominant position over the lower valley of the Ufita river and is just a few kilometers away from the Calore Irpino river. The territory is hilly and flat near the river valleys, but also steep and affected by landslides in the southern part.
The evolution of the name "Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte"
Did you know that this place was known until 1861 as "Montemalo" or "Montemale"? This name derives from the Oscan language and is related to the majestic Maleventum, now known as Benevento. Over time, the name changed and was dedicated to the church dedicated to the archangels in the district of Sant'Arcangelo. This church no longer exists, but the name has had an identity value and now designates the entire city.

History and population of Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte
Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte has an ancient history dating back to pre-Roman times, when it was inhabited by the Hirpini, a Samnite tribe settled in the Campanian Apennino mountains. According to the historian Tommaso Vitale, in the 1500s many inland areas of the Kingdom of Naples, including Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte, were repopulated by migrants who escaped the Turkish invasion and Islamization of the Balkan peninsula, the so-called Slavs. These inhabitants, who came from different countries in southeastern Europe, rebuilt the town, built rural villages, and a church dedicated to the archangels.
The Comune of Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte was also a rustic fiefdom belonging to noble families who were enfeoffed of other fiefs and administered as an agricultural enterprise. Only with Charles III of Spain was the Moccia family enfeoffed with the title of Marquess of Montemalo. However, over the years, the Moccia family lost the ownership of the fief, but not the title, which remained with the family.
The future of Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte
Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte has only 473 inhabitants but has a rich history and cultural heritage that is worth discovering. The territory is ideal for those seeking peace and tranquility, but also for those who love walking or cycling. The city is located near other tourist destinations such as Apice, Benevento, and Paduli.
The Comune is constantly evolving and attentive to the needs of its citizens. Among the planned development projects are greater protection and valorization of historical and cultural heritage, attention to sustainable tourism and agriculture, and greater collaboration between the public administration and the inhabitants of the town.
In summary, Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte is a fascinating place, a town with an ancient soul that has much to offer. Come and discover the beauty of this place and enjoy the breathtaking view of the Ufita valley and the serene climate that awaits you. Welcome to Sant'Arcangelo Trimonte!
