Sant'Antonio Abate

Hello everyone! Today I want to tell you a bit of history and curiosities about the Municipality of Sant'Antonio Abate, located in the beautiful region of Campania.

Physical geography

Sant'Antonio Abate is located in the plain overshadowed by the Monti Lattari mountain range, which culminates in the Sorrentine Peninsula with the summit of Mount Faito.

History

The Municipality of Sant'Antonio Abate is an ancient town, inhabited since remote times by indigenous peoples and Indo-European origins such as the Opici, the Oscans, the Etruscans, Greeks, Samnites, Campanians and Romans. One of the most important battles of the Gothic War (535-553) took place in this territory, the Battle of the Monti Lattari.

After a period of abandonment, the town experienced a slow economic recovery starting from the 11th century thanks to the reclamation of former extensive swampy areas. In recent years, the economy has mainly focused on the tomato processing industry and specialized greenhouse crops.
