History
The origins of the village
The origins of Sant'Angelo Lodigiano are rather ancient and the toponym seems to be related to the figure of the archangel Michael, also present in the municipal coat of arms, rather than to churches or monuments dedicated to St. Angelo in the territory. The inhabited center was first attested between the 10th and 11th centuries and was part of the possessions of the ancient Santa Cristina Monastery, near another monastery founded by the Lombards. In the 12th century, the village became the main parish, in a strategic position.
The Sforza period
In 1452, the village was enfeoffed to Matteo Bolognini who expanded a mighty fortress already present as the seat of his county. Thanks to his prestigious position as prefect of arms in Pavia, first serving the Visconti and then Francesco I Sforza, he obtained the honor of adding "Attendolo" to his name as the founder of the Sforza family. It was during this period that the territory began to be populated by numerous farms.
The period of Spanish domination
During the period of Spanish domination, the village was still enfeoffed to the Bolognini family, while on a fiscal level it had been split into three parts, with one remaining with the Bolognini family, another with the Talenti-Fiorenza marchioness, and the so-called "poor's commune." In the mid-eighteenth century, the village had 3,000 inhabitants and the fiscal situation had been normalized. From a fiscal point of view, the fiefdom depended on the nearby city of Lodi, but many local institutions still used the judicial and administrative statutes of Pavia and the Milanese measuring system.
Unification with the province of Lodi
When Emperor Joseph II of Habsburg-Lorraine established the provinces of the State of Milan on September 26, 1786, Sant'Angelo Lodigiano was included in that of Lodi and all its administrative customs were standardized to those of Lodi.
I hope this information has been useful in understanding the history of our city!
