Sant'Ambrogio has a millenary history and dates back to the times of the Arusnati, a people who lived in the Valpolicella valley. In Roman times, S. Giorgio became a "castrum" and controlled all the neighboring centers, including S. Ambrogio.
During the Middle Ages, the city was under Lombard domination and became a "curtis regia" and "plebs christiana." During the period of Austrian domination, the poet Aleardo Aleardi was confined to Sant'Ambrogio and the street where he lived takes his name.
