Discovering the climate of Sant'Ambrogio
The climate of Sant'Ambrogio is characterized by hot summers and cold winters. I recommend visiting the village during spring or autumn, when temperatures are milder.
The history of Sant'Ambrogio
Sant’Ambrogio di Torino is a village with a long history, dating back to the 6th century BC, when it became part of the territory of Langobardia Maior. In 773 it was the scene of the famous "Battle of the Cluses" between the troops of the Franks and those of the Lombards, representing the military outpost on the border of the lands of the Lombards. Following the battle, Sant'Ambrogio became part of the Carolingian Empire and every year, since 2010, the historical re-enactment of the battle is held on the last Saturday of June.
In the 9th and 10th centuries, the valley was the scene of Saracen raids, then expelled by Arduino the Glabrous, who founded the Marca di Torino. In 1007, the Bishop of Turin Gezone donated Sant'Ambrogio to the Benedictine abbey of the Sacra di San Michele. In 1029 it was donated to the Abbey of San Giusto di Susa and then confirmed by the Count of Savoy Amedeo III in 1147.
The patronal feast
The patronal feast of Sant'Ambrogio is dedicated to San Giovanni Vincenzo, hermit and founder of the Sacra di San Michele and is celebrated on the Sunday closest to November 21st. Sant'Ambrogio is the co-patron of the community.
