Discovering Sant'Agata di Puglia: a town with breathtaking panoramic views
Allow me to introduce you to Sant'Agata di Puglia, a magnificent town located in the province of Foggia, in Puglia, which has won me over with its stunning panoramic beauty and ancient history. Let's explore together the unique features of this charming place.
Physical geography: the balcony of Puglia
Sant'Agata di Puglia is located on the mountains of Daunia, between the Calaggio and Frugno streams, and boasts a perfect panoramic view of the Puglia tableland with the Gulf of Manfredonia, the Vulture Mountain in Basilicata, and the heights of Lacedonia and Trevico in Irpinia. Thanks to this spectacular view, the town is known as the "balcony of Puglia," an ideal place to admire the beauty of Italy.

History of Sant'Agata di Puglia
Roman era: a station along the "Via Herculia"
In the locality of Santa Maria d'Olivola, fourteen imperial inscriptions can be found, suggesting the existence of a "vicus" located along the "Via Herculia." There was probably a temple dedicated to the goddess Cybele in that area.
Swabian period: exempt imperial castle
During the Hohenstaufen domination, the military province of Sant'Agata was called "Castellania." In 1239, Frederick II of Swabia included Sant'Agata among the "castra exempta," or "exempt castles," considered of primary importance both for defensive purposes and as imperial residences. An imperial mandate was issued obliging the inhabitants of the Principato and Terra Beneventana justiciary to repair the Castle of Sant'Agata.
Angevin domination: military and administrative province
Under Angevin domination, the Castle of Sant'Agata retained its function as a military and administrative province. King Charles I of Anjou had a private residence inside the castle and had the chapel dedicated to St. Agatha decorated.
In 1396, the viceroy called a parliament for the public good in the Castle of Sant'Agata, which was attended by all the barons who had followed the Angevin faction.

This ancient town, surrounded by nature, is truly a jewel in Italy's crown. Thanks to its panoramic view, Sant'Agata offers unforgettable emotions and a unique glimpse of the world. Moreover, its fascinating history and the presence of an imperial castle make it even more attractive to those interested in Italian culture and tradition.
