Physical geography
The territory of the province of Imperia occupies the western and southernmost part of Liguria. Historically, it is divided into three areas: Imperia, Sanremo and Ventimiglia.
History
The territory of the current province of Imperia historically belonged to the province of Nice until the Treaty of Turin (1860), from which most of the province was ceded to France. In 1923, with the merger of the capital Porto Maurizio into the new city of Imperia, the province assumed its current name. In May 1945, part of the province's territory was occupied by French troops, but thanks to the peremptory order of US President Harry Truman, Charles De Gaulle's army withdrew beyond Ventimiglia.
Symbols
The official coat of arms of the province of Imperia was approved by decree on February 13, 1927.
Honors
The province of Imperia was awarded the Gold Medal for Military Valor for the sacrifices of its people and for its activity in the partisan struggle during World War II.

Ethnic and foreign minorities
According to Istat data as of December 31, 2014, foreign citizens residing in the province of Imperia were 23,104, or 10.66% of the then-provincial population. The municipality with the highest number of foreign residents is Sanremo (5,862), while Airole is the only municipality where the percentage of foreign residents compared to the Italian population is higher, at 28.24%.
Religion
Catholicism is the prevalent religion in the province of Imperia. The Imperia province is divided between the dioceses of Albenga-Imperia and Ventimiglia-San Remo.
Culture
Among the province's main art cities are Ventimiglia, Imperia and Sanremo. Ventimiglia is famous for the Balzi Rossi, the Roman archaeological area, the medieval city, and the Hanbury botanical gardens. Imperia is famous for the Basilica of San Maurizio, the largest church in Liguria, while Sanremo is known for the famous Casino di Sanremo and the Russian Church.
