Welcome to Sannazzaro de' Burgondi, a Lombard town on the left bank of the Po river. With just over 5000 inhabitants, Sannazzaro is a friendly and welcoming city, with an interesting history and a rich culture.
History
Sannazzaro de' Burgondi has a long and rooted history dating back at least to 1000, when it was called "cella Sancti Nazari". It is believed that the town originated from a monastic settlement. The powerful Sannazzaro family, from which the current name of the town comes, ruled here together with other local nobles such as the Marazzi and the Glaroli. In 1466, the Duke of Milan assigned the fief of Sannazzaro to Giacomo Malaspina first and then to his son Francesco, who started the line of the Marquis of Sannazzaro. The family's lordship lasted until the abolition of feudalism in 1797. In 1713, Sannazzaro passed to the House of Savoy and in 1863 the town took the name of "Sannazzaro de' Burgondi".
Around 1600, a flood of the Po river destroyed much of the town, which shifted to a more defense position on the "coast". In 1963, the large AGIP refinery began operations and contributed to the transformation of the town's economy from agriculture to industry. In December 2011, Sannazzaro de' Burgondi was officially designated a city.
