History

Sandrigo: History, Culture and Venetian Cuisine.

Place Names

The name Sandrigo has ancient origins and there are various theories about its origin. According to the famous Vicentian historian Giovanni Mantese, the name Sandrigo derives from the contraction of Sanctus Enricus or Sanctus Uldericus, the patron saint against the invasions of the Hungarians. However, there is also another theory that the name derives from Latin Fundus Cintericus, the rural fund of Cinterio, a Roman farmer. Lupia, another nearby locality, most likely derives from the Latin alluvies, flood.

Ancient times

The presence of a Christian community in Sandrigo is testified by the discovery of a funerary inscription relating to the young Christian girl, Macrina, on a Greek marble sarcophagus dating back to the 4th - 5th century AD. Furthermore, during an archaeological excavation campaign in 1920, remains of a Lombard necropolis were discovered.

Middle Ages

The name of the locality appears in a document from 1080 concerning ancient monastic rights. Furthermore, the ancient church of Sendricum, dedicated to San Salvatore and later to San Sisto, proves the ancient origin of Sandrigo, in which one of the first parish churches dedicated to Santa Maria, then to Saints Filippo and Giacomo, arose. Despite the exposed position of Sandrigo, which was intensely fought over during the raids of the Hungarians, there is no sign of a castle or other fortified works. However, according to the chronicle of Gerardo Maurisio, in 1209 the village suffered raids when Ezzelino the Monk defeated the Vicentine troops and captured the counts Guidone Maltraversi and Corrado da Vivaro, who had very strong towers and munitions.

Renaissance

During this period Sandrigo was subject to the Signoria of Venice, which exercised power over much of the Veneto territory.

Culture

Sandrigo is a city rich in culture and history. One of the most famous attractions is the Church of San Sisto, one of the first parish churches of Sandrigo, which still has one of the original unglazed terracotta windows. Near the church, there are also the archaeological remains of an ancient Roman settlement.

Another interesting attraction is Villa Da Porto-Barbaran, a sixteenth-century Venetian villa located in the heart of Sandrigo and surrounded by a beautiful park. The villa is known for having been the place where the famous sculptor Antonio Canova spent many of his years and where he created many of his works.

Gastronomy

Sandrigo's cuisine is rich in traditional and genuine flavors. Here you can taste typical Venetian and Italian dishes, such as polenta, made with cornmeal, and risotto alla vicentina, a dish made with rice, milk, and aged Asiago cheese.

Furthermore, here you can taste the famous Durello wine, produced by the Castelmonte winery, one of the oldest and most prestigious wineries in Veneto. Durello wine has a fresh, dry, and aromatic taste, perfect to pair with fish and vegetable dishes.
