Origins of the name

The name of the city dates back to AD 963 when the Slavs, to escape persecution by the Saracens, settled on the fertile lands of Puglia and founded the city with the name "Castrum Sancti Viti" in honor of Saint Vitus martyr. After the Risorgimento, in 1862, the municipality changed its name to San Vito dei Normanni in honor of Bohemond I of Antioch, considered the founder of the medieval village.

History

The origin of San Vito dei Normanni dates back to the period of the Roman Empire. Over the centuries, the municipality came under the control of different civilizations, including the Byzantines, Saracens, Normans, and Bourbons. During World War II, San Vito was destroyed by Allied bombs but was later rebuilt and today is a flourishing tourist center.

San Vito dei Normanni also hosts important historical and artistically significant monuments, such as the Matrice Church of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Dentice di Frasso Castle, and the Guaceto Tower. Moreover, the municipality is also famous for its typical gastronomic products such as wine, oil, and pasta.

Conclusions

San Vito dei Normanni is a charming and beautiful municipality that certainly deserves a visit. Its uncontaminated nature, millenary history, and hospitality of the population will make your stay an unforgettable experience. I wish you a wonderful journey to this pearl of Salento.
