San Vito al Torre: history, geography and monuments.

History

San Vito al Torre has a very ancient history. The territory was probably already included in a Roman "praedium" dependent on Aquileia. In 981, Emperor Otto II donated it to Patriarch Rodoaldo (Patriarch of Aquileia), and remained within the Patriarchate of Aquileia until the Treaty of Noyon in 1516, when it passed to Maximilian I of Habsburg. During this period, San Vito al Torre was aggregated to the Princely County of Gorizia and Gradisca within the Austrian Empire until 1918, when it was annexed to the Kingdom of Italy (1861-1946). Only in 1923 was it included in the province of Udine, while it is still part of the Archdiocese of Gorizia.

The Municipality of San Vito al Torre was established in 1889.

Symbols

The coat of arms and the gonfalon were granted by decree of the President of the Republic No. 3548 of April 6, 1987. The gonfalon is a blue and red parted flag.

Monuments and places of interest

The architectural heritage of San Vito al Torre includes both religious and civil works. In San Vito, you will find the Church of Saints Vito and Modesto, built in 1778. Inside, there is a beautiful eighteenth-century main altar of Gorizia school. Also dating back to the eighteenth century is the Chapel of Sant'Andrea in Nogaredo.
