Physical Geography

The town is located at an altitude of 388 meters along the Roveto Valley and lies in the area of Marsica. The territory is crossed by the Liri River and is developed around Pizzo Deta and the Ernici Mountains. It borders with other Abruzzo municipalities and with the area of Veroli and the province of Frosinone, marking the borders of Abruzzo with Lazio.

San Vincenzo Valle Roveto: history and monuments of Abruzzo.

History

The history of San Vincenzo Valle Roveto is very ancient, dating back to the Middle Ages around the year 1000, when the village developed near the church dedicated to Vincent of Saragossa, the patron saint of the town. The church was already dependent on the Casamari Abbey in the nearby province of Frosinone. The long history of the town is linked to the Piccolomini Castle of Morrea, already present in ancient documents dating back to the year 702 with the name of Horrea.

The territory of San Vincenzo belonged to the counts of Albe, Celano, and the barons of the neighboring center of Balsorano. In the eighteenth century, the center became an autonomous municipality until the feudal abolition of 1806. In 1816, the town regained administrative autonomy assuming the name of San Vincenzo Valle Roveto and including in its municipal territory the centers of Castronovo (San Vincenzo Valle Roveto), Morrea, Roccavivi, and San Giovanni Valle Roveto.

But the town suffered a great tragedy in 1915, when the Marsica Earthquake caused serious damage and part of the town was moved downstream, where the new village was built, called San Vincenzo Inferiore, also transferring the municipal seat.

Monuments and places of interest

Among the monuments of the town, we discover the Church of Santa Restituta, located along the SS 82 della Valle del Liri in the locality of Le Rosce - Santa Restituta. The church, which originally was also dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, is one of the oldest places of worship in the Roveto Valley. Mentioned for the first time in a document of the 10th century, it was severely damaged by the 1915 earthquake and rebuilt in the 1920s.

Symbols

The coat of arms and the flag of the city were granted by the President of the Republic in 1999. The flag is divided into green and white.

In conclusion, San Vincenzo Valle Roveto is a small Abruzzo town with a long and ancient history, located in a suggestive position at the foot of the mountains, and with a great wealth of monuments and places of interest. I hope I've piqued your interest and I invite you to visit it!
