San Stino di Livenza
Welcome to San Stino di Livenza!
Hello everyone! Today I'll be telling you about San Stino di Livenza, an Italian municipality in the metropolitan city of Venice, located in the heart of the eastern Venetian plain.
The Geography of San Stino di Livenza
The territory of San Stino di Livenza extends from the northwest to the southeast, bounded by the Livenza and Malgher rivers. The central location of the municipality makes it easy to access all the major cultural and commercial centers in the area, such as Venice, Treviso, and Pordenone. Additionally, one can reach the main tourist destinations, both seaside, like Caorle, Jesolo, and Bibione, and alpine, like Cansiglio and Piancavallo, in a short amount of time.
Interestingly, the Livenza river is still partially navigable and represents a pleasant unit of tourist and recreational transport. San Stino di Livenza, Corbolone, and the locality of Bosco are the main residential centers located in the northern part of the municipality. Whereas, the landscape changes going south and following the Livenza river, where the reclaimed areas can be found, including the Hydraulic Reclamation of the Seven Sisters.
Origins of the Name
But let's talk about the name. Many believe that the city was called Santo Stino di Livenza, but actually, the correct name is "San Stin," as reported in a 1672 map preserved in the State Archive of Venice. Even today, due to a material error, the city is called by the wrong name. However, in November 2011, the City Council passed a resolution to definitively clarify the issue of the correct name.
The Origin of the City
San Stino di Livenza has an interesting history. 18,000 years ago, the area of the current city was covered with grasses and forests, but with the rise of sea level due to the melting of the Würm glaciers, the beach was moved into the inhabited center. 6-7,000 years ago, the San Stino-Caorle lagoon delimited the Livenza river, thanks to the debris from the surrounding mountains and valleys.
The Seven Sisters Area
Finally, a curiosity about the Seven Sisters area, located south of the city. This territory was called Gastal di San Stin, but was divided among the 7 daughters of the landowner.
I hope I have piqued your interest and perhaps you can come and visit San Stino di Livenza to discover its beauties and its history!
