San Severino Lucano

Welcome to San Severino Lucano

Hi everyone! Today I'll talk about San Severino Lucano, an Italian municipality located in the province of Potenza, in Basilicata. We are in the heart of Pollino National Park, a truly enchanting place.

Physical geography

Here in San Severino Lucano we are very lucky because we are surrounded by numerous sources of water. The main waterway is the Frido stream, which originates from the homonymous valley and gives its name to the aqueduct that brings water to the village. Downstream of the springs it joins other tributaries to form the Peschiera stream, which crosses the Magnano Wood, an area rich in vegetation and crystal clear waters. It seems that in this area the lutra lutra, a beautiful animal also known as the European otter, is still present.

San Severino Lucano: discovering an enchanted municipality

History

The territory of San Severino Lucano belonged to the Sanseverino feud, from which it took its name. The first inhabited nucleus dates back to the fifteenth century, when the Abbey of Sagittario promoted the expansion of agricultural colonization. In 1806 San Severino became an independent municipality and in 1820 the Lucano specification was added. After the Italian unification, banditry became very active in the area due to the rugged terrain and lack of roads. The most famous figure is that of Captain Gennaro Iannarelli, who carried out massacres and executions, even of civilians.

Monuments and places of interest

San Severino Lucano does not have many architectural emergency, but the Abbey of Sagittario is certainly noteworthy.
