Castell'Aicardi: a millenary settlement

Dear readers, today I want to talk to you about Castell'Aicardi, an agricultural hamlet in the municipality of San Secondo Parmense, located about 3 km southwest of the capital, along the road that leads to Fontanellato. This ancient settlement is strategically located on the large bend of the paleochannel of the Taro River.

History of Castell'Aicardi

According to some sources, Castell'Aicardi was built around 920 by Aicardo, the Bishop of Parma, to reinforce the presence of the canons of the Cathedral Chapter of Parma on the territories granted to Guibodo by King Arnolfo of Carinthia in 894. The settlement, which was supposed to be located within the most important court of Pariola, passed to the canons and became an important center of power in the area.

The name of the Rossi family of Parma first appears in a document from 1147, which attests that they owned allodial goods in the territory of Castell'Aicardi. In the 15th century, the territory passed into the hands of the Rossi family, who held onto it until its annexation to the county of San Secondo.

During the war between the county and the duchy of Milan, Castell'Aicardi was the scene of a decisive battle. Thanks to the ardor of its inhabitants, who defended themselves vigorously against the invaders, the hamlet obtained many recognitions from the Rossi family.

Monuments and places of interest

The church of San Pietro Apostolo stands on the bank of the Taro Morto and represents the original nucleus of the hamlet. Surrounded by some houses and a few farmhouses, the church is a suggestive place rich in history. The hamlet then developed towards the north in the direction of San Secondo along the provincial road 44, where the new residential area is located.

In conclusion, Castell'Aicardi is a place worth visiting, both for its millenary history and its natural beauty. If you are lovers of greenery and tranquility, you cannot miss this hamlet with its unique charm.
