San Rocco al Porto
Welcome to San Rocco al Porto!
If you are looking for a small gem nestled in the Lombard plain just a few steps from Emilia-Romagna, San Rocco al Porto is the place for you! This town in the province of Lodi, with its 3348 inhabitants, is located on the northern bank of the Po River and was annexed to the Cisalpine Republic back in 1798.
The origins of the name
It is said that San Rocco, protector against the plague, stopped in the woods on the banks of the Po. This may have given the place its name, while "al Porto" refers to the existence of a river landing to connect the areas of Piacenza to Lombardy, to which San Rocco belonged before the Po diverted its course. Today there is a road connection, the state road 9 Via Emilia, but there used to be some "navarolo" (boatman) who ferried people and goods from one bank to the other of the Po.
History
San Rocco al Porto was annexed to the Cisalpine Republic in 1798, following the fate of Lodi and, consequently, Lombardy. In 1869, the municipality of San Rocco al Porto was merged with Mezzana Casati.
