The Province of Reggio Calabria extended along the southern tip of our beloved country, with a vast coastline overlooking the Tyrrhenian and Ionian Seas. Mostly mountainous, the territory was characterized by the majestic Aspromonte massif, which offered a breathtaking panoramic view. The only flat point was the Piana di Gioia, overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. The surface of the province covered 21.1% of the Calabrian territory and counted 97 municipalities, for a total of 3,183 km².

Other noteworthy municipalities were Palmi, the site of important cultural events, and Reggio Calabria, the capital of the province, which deserved to be visited especially for its splendid promenade overlooking the Strait of Messina.

History

The Province of Reggio Calabria has an ancient and interesting history. It corresponded to the ancient province of Calabria Ultra Prima, established in 1817 after the division of Calabria Ulteriore into Ulteriore I and Ulteriore II. The Province of Reggio Calabria inherited many of its symbols from this historical period and continued to represent these values even in its modern era.
