San Potito Sannitico is a municipality in the province of Caserta, Campania, with a population of approximately 1,934 inhabitants. The city's municipal territory extends for 22 km² and has an altitude ranging from 120 meters above sea level at the border with Alife and Gioia Sannitica to 1,640 meters at Monte Pastonico. San Potito Sannitico is a small pearl nestled in the mountains and is part of the Matese Regional Park.
The ancient history of San Potito Sannitico
The name derives from San Potito, a saint from the 2nd century, whose remains were brought to Benevento, where the cult of the saint was born. The municipal territory of San Potito Sannitico has been inhabited since antiquity, as evidenced by some archaeological finds. In the 15th century, it was known as ''Casale Sancti Potiti'' and administratively depended on Piedimonte Matese. In 1615 it obtained its first limited autonomy from Piedimonte, until its definitive detachment in 1749. During the fascist period, from 1927 to 1945, San Potito Sannitico belonged to the province of Benevento after the temporary suppression of the province of Caserta.
Monuments and places of interest
The historic center of San Potito Sannitico is characterized by the presence of several small palaces from the 18th-19th century located along the provincial road that divides the town into two parts. The parish church, very simple, was rebuilt after the earthquake of June 5, 1688. You can also find the remains of a large Roman villa with dedicated hot springs in the Torrelle area.
